Domo Tackles Challenge of Getting to More Intelligent Actions with Launch of Data Apps

Ideally, successful advanced analytics deployments should lead to more intelligent actions by line-of-business users.  The market has talked for years about concepts such as data democratization and generating data-driven insights, but enterprises still struggle with getting a large portion of their teams to take actions that are informed by data analytics.  Numerous suggestions such as role-based training, model explainability, intuitive dashboards, user-friendly tools, and executive-led initiatives have been made, but with varying degrees of effectiveness.

At Domopalooza 2022, Domo suggested another approach.  It announced a suite of data app tools that make it easier to customize the way data is presented, enabling it to be quickly tailored for a specific purpose, to drive a prescriptive action, or to achieve a desired business outcome.  The tools can be used to create interactive and customized dashboards and reports that meet specific end-user needs and can offer drilldowns and details as required.  Because they are low code, the tools can be used by non-data scientists, which should make it easier and faster to create the data apps, thereby getting valuable information to more people, more quickly.  Domo’s vision is that the suite of tools results in interfaces that can be used via a tablet or mobile phone and target employees that have traditionally been underserved by business intelligence and analytics solutions.

To promote adoption, Domo launched what it calls ‘solution accelerators,’ which are pre-designed data apps that target common business challenges in the retail, consumer packaged goods, and financial services industries.  The Retail Store Performance and Operations accelerator focuses on improving the customer experience within brick-and-mortar stores; the Retail-Vendor Brand Performance & Insight Sharing accelerator helps analyzes sales and inventory levels; the Supply Chain Collaboration and Operations accelerator provides insight into supply chain efficiency and cost; and the Banking Customer Profitability and Behavior Analytics accelerator reveals customer preferences to help banks, credit unions, and mortgage companies improve client relationships.

Building tools that get analytics insights into the hands of employees when and where they need it, especially employees that don’t spend the majority of their time behind a computer, is a wise move.  Similarly, offering low-code tools will bolster the ability to quickly tweak apps as employee needs evolve, which is critical.  As the past two years have shown, agility and flexibility are critical to remaining competitive.  Most likely, there will be some trepidation about putting the development of apps into the hands of non-data science specialists.  However, empowering domain experts who understand their business’s challenges with the ability to quickly deliver analytics tools to their constituents will go a long way in promoting broader analytics adoption.
